The Dao or Tao means 'the way', forming the central principle of Daoism or Taoism, which drives its name from the Dao De Jing attributed to the Chinese philosopher Lao-zi.
Dao refers to the primal force of the Universe, the balance of which is represented by the Ying-Yang symbol. This represents the harmony of opposites. The Yin is the dark, feminine aspect and the Yang is the light, male aspect. Everything contains both Yin and Yang aspects. Dao is the expression of the harmony of these opposites.
Daoism derives from the Dao De Jing written by Lao-zi. The origin of
this text has been attributed to the sixth century BCE but is now thought by
many scholars to originate from the third century BCE. The practice of Daoism
has remain almost unchanged for two thousand years.
By following the Dao the Yin and Yang aspects may be balanced. This will allow
spiritual fulfilment.
